Now that the oxygen, or air, has gone through the major structures of the Respiratory System, the next step in the Respiratory System Obstacle Course involves two very important, but different things: Ventilation and Respiration. Let's explore the differences between the two!
Ventilation vs. Respiration
Ventilation (Breathing)
Is a constant process where you breathe in and out constantly through out the day. It is a process of taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide.
Physical process Is a process of taking oxygen into the lungs Exchange of gases between cells and the external environment Is a voluntary action |
Respiration
Is a process where the body breaks down the oxygen, so that the cells in the body can use it.
Chemical process Is taking the oxygen from the lungs into the blood stream or to the cells Respiration is a process that takes place in the cells Involuntary action |
